The
Frances Dunnagan Brewer Music Library of Durham Music Teachers
Association was first established as a crate of music that
the current
President stored. In l998, DMTA found a permanent home for
the Library at
48l5 Hillsborough Road. Many members donated time, materials
and equipment
to organize the growing collection. In 2000, the estate of
founding member
Loren Withers donated over 55 boxes of music and related items;
as well as a
Harpsichord. That same year, DMTA received a generous financial
gift from
Mrs. Brewer that endowed the Library. The organization named
the Library in
her honor.
Currently the Brewer Library houses approximately l000 volumes
of music,
including classical piano repertoire, jazz, pedagogical resources,
and music
for voice and other instruments. It is a self-managed library,
where members
may check out an unlimited amount of material. Members simply
fill out cards
and return the material promptly after use. There is no time
limit for the
use of materials, but if another teacher is in need of the
item it is
expected that the teacher who has checked it out will return
it as soon as
possible.
Members
may come to the Library to browse the collection, or search
the
contents online. The items may be searched by composer, title,
publisher and keyword.
It is possible either at the Library, or online, to determine
if the
materials have been checked out and by whom.
